MALL 5 P PNEUMATIC AIR SAW.

HISTORY: I got this saw when I bought this home and property with some other old junk, I read about this model on the Internet that they were built in 1946 for the military for use in tunnels and coal mines (no sparks I'm guessing) You can see the green zinc chromate primer, that why I guess this was a military one . The chain and bar was rusted pretty good, I cleaned it up and put some oil in it and an air fitting and with my shop air in runs. I'm not sure what the air requirements are but I think it is more than my little shop compressor will do, but it does run....William Ogle from OHIO.

MALL 6 (ARTHUR MALL).

Thanks to "Bill" that i met in Montreal...on it's way to the casino.. :)
HISTORY:This Model 6, manufactured by the Mall Tool Company of Chicago in 1945, developed 8 hp. It has a 36 inch bar, although bars of other lengths were available. Since you couldn't plunge cut with the tip of the bar with the handle for the second man attached, you needed a bar as least as long as the tree was wide. With many saws of this early type, the bar could be set to cut either horizontally or vertically, but not at an angle. One way to cut an undercut was to saw two horizontal cuts, then chip out the wood between with the adze side of a Pulaski tool, or else make one horizontal cut and chop the rest with an ax.

The invention of the pulaski is widely credited to ED PULASKI in 1911. The pulaski came into wide use by the Forest Service after 1913, and in 1920 the Forest Service began contracting for the tool to be commercially manufactured.

Thank you Diane Mall for providing information about your father history. Pictures below are just samples of what will be preserved forever in the museum along with the biography and numerous pictures of your family.
Testimony:
I have an old bio of my father......written in the late 40's.....I believe.
Would you like a copy of it? Also I have brochures/instructions for many tools.
I have lots of pictures but don't recall any of him in the plant. I think I remember one of him giving a speech somewhere.....I'll look.
He loved cameras and I don't lack pictures of our family as I grew up!
I remember the plant in Chicago and the one in Crete. I even remember his phone number.....bayport 1,8800. He called it everyday from home.
He was a wonderful father. Like a grandpa and Santa all in one.
Sincerely,
Diane Mall

Personal testimony THANKS TO "Larry from Texas,USA":
Good Afternoon,
My father was (Melvin.....) He was VP of Advertising, Mall Tool Co. Chicago, Illinois. He worked with Mr. Mall for 20 Years. Mall was a double Type A personality. As the years progressed Mall was the outside man and my Father was the inside man. Mall would be out all week and return on Fridays. The plant was located on South Chicago Avenue and covered a full city block. One Friday Mall and my Father were on the production floor and a production worker stepped off the line to take a water break. Seeing this, Mall instructed my Father to fire him. Dad encouraged Mall to return to his office so he could finish his day. Once the “smoke cleared” Dad visited with the targeted employee. Dad asked him about his family and if he was going to lunch. “Yes” was the reply. Dad told him to change shirts during lunch and to return to work wearing a baseball cap (the employees were Sox or Cubs fans). A good employee was retained and Mall was satisfied.

Larry R...........(Arther Wilhelm Mall)

Testimony from Diane Mall, Daughter of Arthur Mall:
Hello,
I typed in on the internet "Mall Tools".
Your sight popped up. Very impressive.
I am the daughter of Arthur W. Mall, founder of the Mall Tool Co.
I grew up in the Chicago area, moving to CA. in 1964.
I have a very small collection of Mall Tools that a friend collected for me.
My father was 53 when I was born. He died when I was 13. I have very fond memories of him.
I really never appreciated what he created on his own until well into my adulthood.
His success has created a wonderful lifestyle for me and I appreciate him on a daily basis.
Diane Mall
